Aims and Objectives
The Athelstan Nursery aims to:
- Provide a happy, safe, warm and stimulating environment for all children to play, learn and develop freely.
- Help children to develop responsibility for themselves and their actions and to become competent, confident, independent and co-operative individuals.
- Encourage children to have a positive attitude and respect for both themselves and other people.
- Promote a positive relationship with parents/carers and work in partnership with them to provide high quality play and care for all their children.
- Offer inclusive services that are accessible to all children in the community.
- Undergo regular monitoring and evaluation of our services to ensure that the setting continues to meet the needs of children and parents/carers.
The Athelstan Nursery is committed to meeting the needs of parents and carers by:
- Listening and responding to their views and concerns.
- Keeping them informed of our policies and procedures, including opening times, fees and charges, and programmes of activities.
- Sharing and discussing their children’s achievements, experiences, progress and friendships, along with any difficulties that may arise.
The Athelstan Nursery is committed to providing:

- A carefully planned but flexible curriculum that is interesting, educational, stimulating, fun and takes into account the current interests of the children.
- Activities that promote each child’s social, physical, moral and intellectual development.
- Access to a wide variety of facilities and equipment under safe and supervised conditions.
- A staff team that is experienced, well trained and properly supported.
- Services that meet the conditions of the Children’s Act 1989 and all other relevant childcare legislation, wherever they apply.
- An environment where no child is bullied or suffers discrimination in any form.
Information
The Athelstan Nursery is a charity run setting that operates in a large hall in the Clive Vale area of Hastings. The facilities comprise of a large hall plus a smaller hall, kitchen, toilets and an outdoor space.
There is access for wheelchairs and a disabled toilet.
The setting is open for 39 weeks a year (Term time only) and opens daily from 9.15am to 3.30pm. It is possible to use the ‘Early start’ facility from 8.45am – 9.15am. The setting provides a ‘pick up’ service at lunch time from local schools. WE ARE CLOSED BANK HOLIDAYS.
The setting offers a ‘Toddler session’ for you to attend with your child once he/she reaches the age of 2yrs. These sessions are held on Tuesday and Friday afternoons from 1.30pm – 3.00pm.
The setting is registered with OFSTED and inspected under The Welfare requirements from Statutory Framework of the Early Years Foundation Stage. This Framework sets the Standards for Learning, Development and Care for children from birth to five.
The setting is registered to receive The Early Years Education Entitlement. This enables all children to receive up to five free nursery sessions per week from the term after they reach 3yrs old.

The Nursery Manager is responsible to The Management Committee of The Athelstan Nursery.
The Manager and Deputy, in line with the agreed policy, will decide the allocation of places. The setting is registered for 36 children per day. The deputy Manager will operate a waiting list and allocate places as soon as they become available.
The Management Committee play a very important role within the setting. The Committee meets once a term and all parents/carers are welcome to attend.
Privacy and Data Protection
The Athelstan Nursery processes personal information about its pupils and is a ‘data controller’ for the purposes of the Data Protection Act 1998. We collect information from you and may receive information about your child from their previous nursery/ child care provider.
We hold and use your child’s information to support their teaching and learning, monitor and report on how well they are doing, provide them with pictorial care and to assess how well the setting is doing.
The information we hold includes yours and your child’s contact details, your child’s Summative Assessment Record, attendance information, ethnic group, special educational needs and any relevant medical information.
We will not give information about you or your child to anyone outside school without your permission unless the law and our rules permit it. We are required by law to pass some of your child’s information to East Sussex County Council and to the Department for Education (DfE) and local NHS agencies. This includes when a child moves to reception class in primary school.
